Hair

Bryton and Preston have been growing their hair out lately. It is currently in that awkward in-between stage where it just does it's own thing and basically sticks up everywhere.

Today B's hair was just spiky. Spiky all over. And I had a total flashback to when he was little and had the same crazy hair!

Oh I miss that cutie on the right! Amazing the difference that 5 years makes!

Goodbye 1

We've moved out of baby-dom into toddler-hood!

Archer, at 2:
* Still a complete Mommy's boy!
* Loves his brothers, but gets a little vengeful when they won't play with him (the way HE wants to play!)
* Loves the water (not that we've had much warm weather...but he loves the kiddie pool in our backyard & the Silverwood water park).
* Is starting to put some simple sentences together, but he's not really a big talker.
* Can throw a mean temper tantrum.  Kicking, screaming, throwing himself on the floor...you get the picture.
* Doesn't like to sleep.  He has more important things to do!
* Loves to talk on the phone, and doesn't ever want to give up the phone once he starts talking!
* One of his favorite pastimes is watching the airplanes.  We live pretty close to a small airport so he loves to watch the sky for the planes and then announce to the world "AIRPLANE!  AIRPLANE!"
* Is a complete cuddle-bug.  He loves to give/get hugs & kisses.  He will just come up to you and throw his arms around you to give you a big hug completely out of the blue (well, only if he knows you.  He isn't a fan of strangers!).
* Dirt, worms, bugs, rocks.  Enough said.
* Does NOT like TV and movies.  Won't watch them at all.  We did get him to sit through a little bit of Cars 2 in the theater, but that was a huge accomplishment and it hasn't been repeated.
* Loves swinging, bike rides, and walks.
* Does NOT like riding in the car.  We finally flipped him around forward facing a week or so ago...it hasn't helped much but it is easier to get him in & buckled!  When he was rear-facing, he would wedge himself in and hold himself up & out of his seat with his feet so we couldn't buckle him.  It was TERRIBLE.
* His favorite book is "Goodnight Moon."
* His favorite toy is probably his "My Pal Scout" puppy...or legos.  Or anything that a brother might currently be playing with!

________________________________________________________________

The day Archer was born was pretty eventful, to say the least.  I had been in pretty easy labor most of the day, but when John got home from work things picked up a bit and I remember telling him that I should have gone to the hospital and gotten an epidural.  This prompted John to call the midwife for her to come over ASAP.  I hadn't been in hard labor for long so I didn't think it was a big rush, but he thought things were moving quickly.  Turns out, I was almost fully dilated, but things weren't feeling quite right to me, and we almost transferred to the hospital.  I was in and out of the tub and just uncomfortable...not "in labor" uncomfortable, because that's a given, but uncomfortable in a different way that I can't describe.  I was a little concerned that something was wrong.  I decided to stay out of the tub (I had wanted a water birth like I had with Preston) because I just couldn't get comfortable...then my water broke and I finally started feeling the urge to push (this was about an hour after I was fully dilated).

Long story short, Archer had quite the time making his appearance into the world!  He was born with his arms behind his back so his shoulders were nice and broad, resulting in shoulder dystocia.  My midwife moved quickly and removed him from me (ugh - won't go into the details about this!!!) and he was perfectly fine.  We were so fortunate that she was able to get him out quickly and he didn't have any broken bones (or worse).  I unfortunately came out of it with a broken tailbone which still gives me issues 2 years later, but I consider that a small price to pay for a healthy baby.  He weighed 9 lbs 4 oz and was 23" long.  I know that's big for a newborn, but it still amazes me how "little" they start out compared to his 30ish lbs now!  Thank goodness I don't triple my weight in 2 years! :)

Just born, cuddling with a very exhausted Mommy!
Herbal bath...about 1 hour old.

Almost

Almost 2.  I can't believe it.  My baby is growing up!  We had a little early birthday party at Grandma & Grandpa's this evening, so Archer got to learn the birthday ropes.  He loved it all: cake (obviously!), the singing, the candles, learning to blow them out, and of course, presents!

I have mixed feelings about my last baby turning 2.  On one hand, I'd love to get a full night of sleep (yes, he still has only slept through the night a handful of times!) and have it be a little easier to take the boys somewhere by myself, but on the other hand...this is my last time to experience THIS.
I can't get over how grown-up he looks in this picture!
Daddy teaching him how to blow out the candles
Trying out his cupcake
How do you get into this thing?!

Today

Today is my baby's first trip to the pediatrician.

I'm nervous.

He's still so LITTLE.  He was checked out by our midwife for the first 6 weeks of his life, but since then we've had no reason to have him seen.  Our last pediatrician here wasn't exactly supportive of our decision to delay/selectively vaccinate, so I'm a little nervous to go see the new pediatrician.  He comes with rave reviews from my midwife, so I'm hoping he's a little more accepting.  We shall see!

My plan was for B to get 1 shot today (he's only had 2 before, because I didn't want to take him back to the same pediatrician), but since he has really only been feeling 100% since yesterday, I'm not really sure I want to inflict that on him!  And Archer actually won't be getting any shots today because we're planning to wait until he turns 2 (when the blood brain barrier is more fully developed).

I'm such a wimp with vaccines that John is taking a late lunch to meet us there for some moral support.

*Disclaimer, since this tends to be a hot topic: I have not read anything that leads me to believe there is a SOLID 100% link between vaccines and terrible side-effects (although there are plenty of articles and stories about tentative links).  I believe that FOR US, this decision to delay and selectively vaccinate is best.  I don't judge those who vaccinate on schedule or who don't vaccinate at all!  However, I DO think that every parent should make an informed decision that they feel is best for their family.

I just realized...

...that my baby is growing up. I can no longer ignore it. In the past couple of weeks, here is what has happened:
1. He spent the night with his grandparents (obviously this was huge for me too...I was a little nervous but he did well).

2. He is having a major verbal explosion. Words now include: ball, moo, baa, drink, Bad Dog, mama, dada, orange, open, banana, cheese, book...and lots lots more. I'm sure some of them are just words that only I can understand, but still!

3. He stopped nursing. I had mixed feelings about this, being that he is my last baby, but I was also happy that he just stopped on his own without it getting to the point where I WANTED to wean him.

4. Last night he slept IN HIS OWN BED from 7:30 pm - 6:00 am. This is huge. I know, for a lot of kids this is normal, but for Archer it's amazing. He has been a terrible sleeper since birth (and therefore I have been sleep-deprived for the past 1 1/2 years), so for him to sleep this long alone is big.

5. He is starting to understand the concept of teasing...he now thinks it is funny to call his brothers "Bad Dog" when they do something/say something that he doesn't like. He marches up to them and points his finger right at their nose and says BAD DOG! Then he giggles. It's so cute. He especially likes to tease B this way because he generally responds "I'm not a bad dog!" Archer LOVES that.

6. He points to his (or others') tummy, nose, ears, mouth, etc.

7. He is big into imitating. It's cute, but can get dangerous also. For example, if he hears the word potty, he IMMEDIATELY runs to the toilet. He really likes the toilet a little too much! Maybe he will be an easy/early potty-trainer?

8. He is starting to protest at being rear-facing in his car seat. We did get our car seats replaced when we got hit, so I bought a "roomier" seat for him. It doesn't seem to help too much, but hoping he'll tolerate the rear-facing for a while longer since it's so much safer!

We became parents to one sweet, chunky, much-anticipated (as in, 15 days past his due date) little boy.

I had tried everything to get labor to start - acupuncture, castor oil, spicy food, tons of walking...you name it, I tried it. As illogical as it sounds, every day I became less convinced that I would go into labor, and more convinced that I would be pregnant forever (have you seen those shows on Discovery channel???). Finally, finally...labor started in the early mornings hours of the 31st, continued all day, and we brought in 2006 in the birth center while I was in labor and fireworks were being set off outside. Of course, when I went into labor at about 3:00 am, I figured we'd have a 2005 baby, but Preston had other ideas. At 9:21 am on January 1st our "little" bundle was born, all 9 lbs 14 oz of him.

He was such an angelic little baby, even as a newborn. He hardly cried, slept amazingly well, and basically was just an easy-going kid. He is mostly like that now, with some 5 year old independence being asserted (which I'm thankful for - most of the time). He made it easy to forget the insanely long labor, except for the part where I vividly remember thinking "oh so THIS is why women go to the hospital and get epidurals!"

It is hard to believe it's been 5 years, but at the same time, it seems like he has been in our lives forever.

Hand-Me-Downs

Preston (2006)

Bryton (2008)

Archer (2010)

John and I took a spontaneous "pre-baby" vacation in Sept. 2005 to Hawaii (Kauai). We only stayed for a few days but we crammed A LOT of fun into those few days. Yeah, fun like taking a boat up to the Na Pali coast and me puking my guts out on the way back (blame the baby, right?). Anyway, we bought this cute Future Surf Dude shirt while we were in Hawaii and it has managed to survive all 3 boys. I'm not really a sentimental person when it comes to "stuff." I regularly purge my house of all non-essential items, including things that might be considered sentimental...but, I think I'm going to keep this shirt. Maybe it will fit on the Cabbage Patch (because my Mom does save stuff like that...the boys have my old Cabbage Patch doll - the Barbies and My Little Ponies went in the garage sale pile though!).
